Foreign policy

During my years as Kenya’s Foreign Minister I contributed in a small way, though under very difficult circumstances to the furtherance of Kenya’s interests in the East African region, the Horn, the rest of Africa and indeed within the UN system. My experience taught me that much more is possible within the region and the gains for Kenya will be tremendous.

We are already reaping the benefits of supporting the peace effort in Southern Sudan which I was privileged to have played a role in. The private sector and Kenyan employees have been able to capture huge segments of the market as Southern Sudan looks to Kenya to supply goods and services as it rebuilds.

I see a much bigger role for Kenya in directing and encouraging peace and economic growth in our region. Indeed, much of Africa and the world are waiting for us to wake up to our enormous influence and act for the benefit of all by taking on this role that fits us so naturally. Our national goals are closely tied to the goals and the fate of countries in the sub-region, the region and to the international system as a whole. The social unrest and insecurity of our neighbours affects us directly with consequences for our own security and the displacement of people some as refugees in our country. The economic fortunes of our neighbours are our economic fortunes as they affect major markets for our goods and services and the supply of raw materials. Any crisis they have in governance affects us our course as a sub-regional and regional bloc.

Globalization is really a mild expression of the reality that we are today more dependent on each other than ever before and must work together to find common solutions to the problems that confront us as human beings. Now, globalization brings both opportunity and challenge. We must seize opportunity and transform the challenges such they become opportunity. Immediate challenges touch on the need to protect our independence, our sovereignty and the territorial integrity of our country. Opportunities exist to expand trade and investment; to play a leading role in finding long term solutions to regional and international peace and security; to collaborate and partner with others in ways that will enable us to meet our national objectives, especially in the context of addressing poverty and ensuring that all Kenyans can live in dignity and self respect.
